Marie-Josée Hogue is a member of Heenan Blaikie’s Litigation group and Executive Committee. She has been awarded the distinction of Lawyer Emeritus from the Barreau du Québec and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

 

Ms. Hogue has wide-ranging expertise in civil and commercial litigation. Her practice is equally divided between commercial litigation (shareholder disputes, securities proceedings, breach of contract, manufacturer's liability, etc.) and professional liability litigation (hospitals, professional orders, securities dealers, etc.). She regularly appears before all levels of the Quebec civil courts and has extensive experience before appellate courts. She also frequently appears before domestic and international arbitration tribunals.

 

Having joined Heenan Blaikie as a partner in 1987, she took a leave of absence from 1988 to 1989 to serve as a clerk at the Supreme Court to Antonio Lamer.

 

Ms. Hogue was elected Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2009. She is recognized as one of Canada’s leading lawyers in the areas of corporate and commercial litigation and bet-the-company litigation in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 editions of The Best Lawyers in Canada (Woodward/White), and as a recommended lawyer in dispute resolution in the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 editions of Chambers Global : The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business. Ms. Hogue has been recognized for many years in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory in corporate commercial, in directors' and officers' liability, in securities litigation and in professional liability, and in the Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada.

 

From 1991 to 1995, Ms. Hogue was a lecturer in the Master of Health Law programme at the Université de Sherbrooke Faculty of Law. From 1991 to 1993, and again from 2000 to 2003, she lectured at the Faculty of Law of the Université de Montreal. Ms. Hogue also taught the “Representation” course at the Quebec Bar School from 2001 to 2012. Moreover, she has presented numerous conferences on a vast array of topics of interest to lawyers and business people.

 

Ms. Hogue is actively involved in many organizations. She has been a member of the Liaison Committee linking the Bar of Montreal Association with the Court of Appeal of Québec for several years, and a board member of the Junior Bar Association of Montreal. She is a member of the Québec Bar Indemnity Fund. She has been invited to demonstrate trial advocacy skills to lawyers participating in the trial advocacy seminar, and also acts as a trainer. She is also involved in her community and is a member of Sports Montréal's Board of Directors and the fundraising campaign committee of Arrêt-Source, a shelter for troubled young women.

 

During her law studies, Ms. Hogue distinguished herself by being granted the Canadian Bar Association Scholarship for the Quebec student having most excelled academically and having best contributed to the community at large. She was also the recipient of the Albert-Leblanc Medal, conferred by the Université de Sherbrooke Faculty of Law for her exceptional results throughout her law studies.
