Carolyn Dong is ranked as a leading energy lawyer in IFLR1000, Chambers and the Euromoney Business Law Awards. She has rich experience in advising on Chinese clients’ overseas investments and international investors for their investments into China. She provides a full scope services including advising on transactional and corporate structures as well as operational issues.
Through her over 30 year career, Carolyn has been involved in many major cross-border transactions involving China, including advising Chinese state-owned enterprises and private companies in many outbound M&A investment transactions and associated acquisition financing and advising on project development work. She has also advised several Fortune Global 500 companies on their inbound investments. Her clients include DONG Energy, BP, BASF, INEOS, Eastman Chemical, Huntsman Corporation, Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC, China Shenhua, China Huadian, Shanghai Shenergy, Peabody, China Cinda Assets Management Company, Wengfu Group, among others.
Prior to joining DLA Piper in 2013, Carolyn has more than 26 years of corporate legal practice and academic experience (in both Chinese SOEs as well as MNCs), having spent time at King & Wood Mallesons (Beijing), BP (Hong Kong & Singapore), Sinopec (Beijing Headquarters), Clifford Chance (Hong Kong) and at the Faculty of Law of a university in Beijing. Benefitting from her rich experience in working on large Chinese state-owned companies’ major outbound investments and also major Sino-foreign joint venture project transactions in China, Carolyn has a deep understanding of both Chinese and international commercial culture and practices and she is adept at finding practical solutions for both Chinese and international investors in solving issues in Sino-foreign joint ventures incorporated in China and overseas.

Prior to joining DLA Piper, Julia gained experience working for another international law firm in London and Hong Kong for almost 10 years, before taking on the role of Executive Director for a global investment bank in Hong Kong.
Julia was recognised by the Asian Lawyer as “in-house counsel of distinction” for 2014; and recognised as one of the top 100 Women in Global Investigations by “GIR Women in Investigations” 2015.
