Dr Deepa Kachroo Tiku is a partner at K&S Partners and based out of the Gurgaon (National Capital Region) office and has been practicing in the field of patent law since 2004 with a prior experience of working with a large Indian FMCG company as well as an active researcher in one of the premier research institutes of India. A registered patent agent with the Indian Patent Office and an attorney at law, Deepa specializes in Life Sciences patents, particularly biotechnology and allied areas as well as biomedical, nanotechnology, chemistry, and polymer related inventions. She advises both domestic as well as international clients in all aspects of Indian patent law and practice, including enforcement of patents, freedom to operate, due diligence, technology transfer and licensing. She also handles matters related to plant variety protection as well as the Indian biodiversity law.
Deepa is a named inventor in total of 21 granted patents worldwide and has several publications and articles to her credit. With her unique blend of science and rich legal experience, Deepa is considered as a go-to person for handling and advising on complex patent matters in India.
Deepa is currently serving as the Vice-Chair – Emerging IP sub-committee at the International Bar Association. Deepa also serves as a member of the National Biotechnology Committee of CII, the premier Chamber of Commerce in India and a member of the IP and Technology Management Committee of the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) at Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL).
Deepa is a regular speaker at various IP Fora and works actively on IP policy related issues as well.
Latha advises clients on all aspects of the prosecution and enforcement of trade marks, domain names, copyrights and geographical indications. She also handles transactional and advisory work relating to trade marks and copyrights and regularly advises production and media houses and social media network companies on copyright issues.
A niche area of her practice focuses on the protection of geographical indications. She has been assisting the Government of India in the protection of certain well-known Indian geographical indications such as Basmati rice and Darjeeling tea both in India and overseas. She also actively represents the interests of certain foreign geographical indications such as Champagne, Scotch Whisky, Irish Whiskey, Cognac, Pisco, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Grana Padano cheese and Prosecco wines in India.
Latha regularly appears before the various High Courts and the Supreme Court of India in connection with the enforcement of IP rights of the clients she represents.
Prior to joining the firm in 1998, Latha worked as a litigator and as an in-house counsel for a telecommunication company in India. She is a regular speaker at various national and international fora on issues relating to protection and enforcement of trade marks and geographical indications. She is currently serving as a member of the Publications Committee of the International Trademark Association (INTA) for the 2020-2021 term.
