Via Law Corporation (VLC) is a specialist boutique legal practice which was established three and a half years ago. We remain a high powered, nimble and tech-savvy law firm in Singapore for intellectual property (IP) and technology, media and telecoms work (TMT).
The uniqueness of this firm is the directors’ blend of experience – they are active litigators who advise regularly on transactions and non-litigious issues. Besides legal practice, both directors also have international in-house exposure and business experience. Their in-house experience leads the firm to tailor advisory work, and drafting of agreements to be more “in-house” centric, namely, listening to the client and understanding their needs, and providing straightforward practical advice that is within budget.
The firm makes an effort to fully understand the deeper aspects of IP, resulting in the firm being engaged in a landmark copyright case; namely Global Yellow Pages copyright dispute which is proceeding on appeal before the full bench of the Court of Appeal (an unusual occurrence). Various other IP matters such as the Ferlandz case (on trade mark infringement) raises new issues of law. Being a boutique firm, the focus is not on building market share but rather developing deep relationships with its clients such as Changi Airport, Levi Strauss & Co., and Global Yellow Pages.
Concurrent with advising clients on technology and business models, the firm works on drafting innovative agreements to mesh with its clients’ technology. Our expertise in technology lies in PaaS (and SaaS) development and integration and the intellectual property issues that arise from the use of cutting edge technology. The firm is currently working to broaden its FinTech and CleanTech capabilities. In the field of media and telecommunications, the firm is pleased to have attracted new clients such as CatchPlay, Interstellar, Optimatic and ResMed. Please refer to our work highlights. The firm also takes pride in its litigation practice with both directors and the consultant being active litigators. Besides litigation arising from IP issues, the firm also represents clients in general commercial, corporates and insurance disputes, dealing with issues such as breach of contract, res judicata, breach of fiduciary duty, conspiracy, employment, work injury etc.
